CNMAT welcomes Visiting Researcher, Scientist, and Artist, Ali Momeni for Spring 2020.

Ali Momeni works at the intersection of art, sound, design, and technology.  While at CNMAT, Ali will continue the development of ml.lib, a library of interactive machine learning tools for musicians and artists; and second, design and fabrication of several hybrid physical-digital instruments for drawing and music-making.

Ali completed his PhD at Cal in 2005, and has since held professorships at the University of Minnesota, Carnegie Mellon University, and Brown University. At these institutions, his teaching spanned contemporary and public art, instrument building, sound art, interaction design, physical computing, digital fabrication, and augmented and virtual reality. His service included contribution to and leadership of cross-campus curriculum and program development for integrative art, design and technology; and the creation of interdisciplinary learning-and-making spaces that support these programs. His areas of research include human-computer-interaction and creativity, and human-robot-interaction for autonomous systems; his creative work encompasses performances and installations, expressive technologies for learning, and participatory public art works. Momeni currently serves as a Senior Principal Scientist at Shield AI, a robotics start-up developing autonomous and resilient artificially intelligent systems.  At Cal, Momeni will pursue two projects: First, continued development of ml.lib, a library of interactive machine learning tools for musicians and artists; and second, design and fabrication of several hybrid physical-digital instruments for drawing and music making.
