Jeremy Wagner, Technical Director at CNMAT, has received a 2024 Chancellor's Outstanding Staff Award, one of the highest honors given to UC Berkeley staff.

Composer, performer, and sound designer, Jeremy Wagner has served as Research Composer and Technical Director at CNMAT since 2016, providing sound & video engineering support for CNMAT concerts & events while mentoring graduate composers in a wide range of production technologies.

As a composer, Jeremy’s music focuses on intricate constructions for small forces meant to probe the limits of individual human virtuosity.  His music has been premiered across the United States and Europe by some of the world’s most gifted performers and this record of performance has been recognized with several grants and awards including commissions by New Music USA and the McKnight Composer Fellowship, among others.  Jeremy’s sound design work with filmmaker Hisham Bizri has shown in film festivals worldwide including Cannes & Sundance.  Current collaborations include Beneath the Wide, Wide Heaven (2016) and The Portrait of an Artist (2017).

With a performance career spanning two decades and a wide range of genres, in recent years Jeremy has developed an expertise in the preparation and performance of new electroacoustic works.  In this capacity, he has performed in festivals and ensembles across the United States including Minnesota’s Spark Festival, the Ensemble of the Contemporary Music Workshop and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, among others.  In 2017 he will appear as part of the Spoleto Festival USA in the North American premiere of Luca Francesconi’s Opera Quartett.

Jeremy holds both a Ph.D. (2012) and Masters Degree (2008) in Music Composition from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities as well as Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music Composition and Saxophone Performance from Wichita State University (2003).  He has studied composition with Walter Mays, Katherine Murdock, Dean Roush, Adam Greene, Douglas Geers and dissertation advisor James Dillon.  He has participated in courses and master classes with Luca Francesconi, Brian Ferneyhough, Liza Lim, Phillipe Manoury, Rebecca Saunders & Vladimir Tarnopolsky.
