This lecture-concert with L. Alexis Emelianoff caps off her one-month residency at CNMAT.
This research visit has focused on electromagnetics and electricity as media for sound, and hybrid flat-panel output systems.

The post-industrial landscape hums with emissions from communications systems and the ubiquitous power grid, drowning out the electromagnetic rhythms of organic life forms and the earth itself. There is potential for sonic form here, whether periodic, arrhythmic, abrasive, obstinate... these are the ‘expressive traits’ of the activity present behind walls and in objects of utility.

Emelianoff will discuss her research and sound practice, followed by a mini-concert of Induction Instruments. This recent system sonifies electromagnetic activity through a network of coils, activating surfaces through the interaction of electromagnetic and permanent magnetic materials.
