On March 3, 2023 at 10am CNMAT will host an open lecture/presentation where Linda Bouchard will introduce her custom tool OCULAR SCORES for the creation of graphical notation from the analysis of complex sounds. She has been developing this tool since 2018 as a resident researcher at matralab, Concordia University in Montreal with Joseph Browne, the designer. She will present her work on ocular scores with the participation of Carmine Cella, Jeffrey Lubow and Ellen Ruth Rose.
Linda has been in residence at CNMAT since August 2022, working in collaboration with Jeffrey Lubow and Carmine Cella on a new branch of Ocular Scores directly inspired by Carmine Cella’s prototype, titled “Morphograph.
In line with the initial compositional goals of the project to translate short musical gestures into repeatable images, this latest version of Ocular Scores will expand the palette of Ocular Scores with arbitrary mapping over analysis parameters and resultant shapes. The goal is for this tool to be distributed to a general public of musicians, composers, improvisers, and performers. Jeffrey will explain the project in more detail.
Guest violist Ellen Ruth Rose will perform a commissioned work called Katakana. The score will be projected for the audience to see.
We will conclude with a session of questions and answers with the participants.
