# Why tag?

Correctly tagging nodes is the key to helping people find their way to your nodes. For example, users can quickly find their way from a conference paper on [cnmat:node/2211|Augmenting the Cello] to a [cnmat:node/7718|composition by Edmund Campion] by following the tag [cnmat:category/musical_instruments_method_sound_production/chordophone/lute/cello|cello]. By tagging multiple nodes with the same term, a cross-reference is created. These cross-references can be used to sort and sift the content of the CNMAT site in a variety of ways.

# What is a tag?

A tag is part of Drupal's taxonomy module. Tags are situated hierarchically in a vocabulary set and often have definitions associated with them.

# Considerations

Tag only the most significant terms to a node. For example, while many Music and Inter-Arts Projects might be related to "Pitch", only tag them with the term if it is one of the most salient features of the piece, or better yet, use one of the child-terms of Pitch if applicable like drone, glissando, etc.

Selecting more than one term from each vocabulary is usually possible and encouraged.
