The course
------------
By cutting, sewing, sticking, weaving, and layering unusual e-textiles we will build interactive clothing and musical instruments in a collaborative workshop environment. We will connect our fabric pressure, stretch, bend, and displacement sensors to lilypad e-sewing computing platform, we will sew connections to arrays of leds and sound makers. We will explore CNMAT's extensive library of e-textiles and more advanced techniques such as computer controlled embroidery and laser cutting. We will look at variants and alternatives to the lilypad such as wireless xbee or uOSC.

This class grew out of the special focus of our 2008 sensor class that can be explored here and here and here. Here are some ideas of what can be done with the lilypad and new materials.

Materials and Tools
-------
You will take your lilypad and associated sensors and projects home with you. You will need a laptop if you plan to spend a lot of time programming the lilypad. If you are attached to your own sewing tools bring them along. Bring some empty bobbins for your sewing machine so you can take home conductive thread.

Supporting Sponsors
-------
Thanks to our supportive sponsors the kits we are putting together include an unusually rich in up-to-date materials including piezoresistive polymer fabric, solderable conductive kevlar thread. These sponsor include (so far) Shieldex, Micro-Coax and Eeonyx and Qiosystems. Sparkfun has been responsive in improving the Lilypad platform and we will be using their new 328 Main boards.
