Performance by Andrew Blanton, Peter Nyboer, Xiao Wu
Description for Program
Interstitial Echo, is a real-time audio & video synthesis performance by Andrew Blanton, Peter Nyboer, and Xiao Wu paying tribute to artist Richard Mayhew and the history of Montalvo as an epicenter for visionary experimentation and research. The ensemble will perform a piece that honors the interdisciplinary performance Meyhew created in the Carriage House Theatre at Montalvo in the 1970s. Instead of the slide projection of paintings from Meyhews’ students at San José State University, current SJSU MFA Candidate Xiao Wu uses AI synthesis to process live video feeds creating real-time audio-reactive images for the performance. During his tenure at SJSU Mayhew established the Creative Center for the Arts and Science with Dwight Cannon and pioneering electronic musician Allen Strange. Professor Andrew Blanton will perform using real-time signal processing with electronics and custom software on a marimba made of driftwood found on the coast of California, in collaboration with electronic musician Peter Nyboer using a Buchla Music Easel to create a digital echo chamber. Honoring that vision today, creating interdisciplinary performances that straddle Art, Music, and Science at the University, this performance echoes the tradition of blending areas of expertise with a long and rich history at SJSU, Montalvo, and the surrounding communities.
