odot

First developed as a set of Max/MSP patches by Adrian Freed, odot was later ported to C and expanded into a full expression language by John MacCallum, with contributions from Andy Schmeder, Rama Gottfried, Ilya Rostovtsev, Jeff Lubow, and others at CNMAT between 2007 and 2016. Its language supports functional, declarative, imperative, and object-oriented programming styles alongside timing and scheduling primitives for sequencing and synchronizing sound in real time. Odot has been used in works performed internationally, including at Ars Electronica's Kepler's Gardens. It remains...

Orchidea

Orchidea is a framework for static and dynamic computer-assisted orchestration.

It is the new generation of the Orchid* softwares for assisted orchestration (originally created in the Ircam Music Representation team). It is a joint project between Ircam, HEM Geneve and UC Berkeley and is made of several tools, including a standalone application, a Max package and a set of command line tools.

Orchidea: a comprehensive framework for target-based computer-assisted dynamic orchestration

Carmine-Emanuele Cella
2022

This paper has two different aims: presenting the problem of target-based computer-assisted orchestration and introducing a new computational framework to solve it, called Orchidea. After the definition of the static and the dynamic versions of the problem, a historic perspective will be discussed. The cultural context of assisted orchestration will be examined, with particular attention being given to spectral music. In the second half of the paper, the Orchidea framework for dynamic target-based computer-assisted orchestration will be introduced and...

A three-dimensional timbre model via Peano curves

2022

Creating a formal model for timbre is one of the most compelling open questions in music research. In contrast to more traditional perceptually-oriented approaches, often aimed at sound analysis, we introduce a three-dimensional geometric model of timbre, specifically designed for sound synthesis. The proposed model relies on the properties of space-filling curves for multidimensional scaling, and represents via three parameters, any static combination of sinusoidal partials with an additional noisiness component. We detail the construction of the model and its properties and discuss...

A Framework for Modifying Orchestral Qualities in Computer-Aided Orchestration

Daniele Ghisi
Carmine-Emanuele Cella
2021

This article introduces the Orchidea Orchestral Qualities framework (OOQ), an extension of the Orchidea environment for computer-aided orchestration. Traditional target-based orchestration generally reconstructs a target sound “as faithfully as possible” with a collection of samples. But more often than not, composers do not have specific targets in mind while performing orchestration tasks. A large class of orchestration practices deal with the transformation of musical material to enhance or reduce certain of its qualities (such as making a score more “brilliant,” “blurry,” “dense...

Dynamic Computer-Aided Orchestration in Practice with Orchidea

2021

The problem of target-based computer-aided orchestration is a recurring topic in the contemporary music community. Because of its complexity, computer-aided orchestration remains a partially unsolved problem and several systems have been developed in the last twenty years. This article presents a practical overview of the recently introduced Orchidea framework for dynamic computer-aided target-based orchestration. Orchidea continues the line of tools dedicated to the subject (the so-called Orchid* family) originally developed at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/...
