CNMAT Externals is a collection of specialized objects, or "externals," for Max/MSP that extend the platform's core capabilities for audio synthesis, signal processing, and real-time control. The library grew out of CNMAT's early work implementing Open Sound Control, as the center helped define and popularize OSC as a standard for musical communication between software and devices, alongside externals for spectral analysis, filtering, and other DSP tasks developed over more than two decades of research. The library has become a staple of the Max/MSP community and has been recognized by Cycling '74, Max's developer, as essential content for the platform. Built primarily in C with supporting Max patches, CNMAT Externals runs on both macOS and Windows, including Apple Silicon, and remains publicly available and actively distributed through CNMAT's GitHub and the Max Package Manager — a continued expression of the center's commitment to open-source tools for composers, performers, and researchers.
