John-Carlos Perea will be in residence at CNMAT as a visiting researcher, composer, and performer for the academic year 2022-23. In addition to being a GRAMMY® Award winning multi-instrumentalist and recording artist, John-Carlos is Associate Professor of American Indian Studies in the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University.

John-Carlos will be developing a musician-specific augmented performance environment for voice, cedar flute, and drum.

On Wednesday, April 27, CNMAT released a maintenance update for CNMAT Externals v1.0.5 that provides support and compatibility with Apple's M1 processors as well as other minor updates and bug fixes. Users should update the CNMAT Externals through the Max Package Manager:

CNMAT's Lead Researcher, Department of Music Assistant Professor Carmine-Emanuele Cella, with co-authors, recently published two new papers on the mathematical modeling of music timbre.

As part of his composition, Kobi, which will be premiered at Milano Musica in May 2022 by Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Professor Carmine Cella is working to complete the first model of an augmented Mbira. Carmine has partnered with Ozias Macoo, an instrument builder from Mozambique who has built a special Mbira for the project.

CNMAT is pleased to welcome international composer and researcher Marlon Schumacher for a spring research residency. Marlon will be working in collaboration with Professor Carmine Cella and on his own independent research initiatives.

Marlon Schumacher is full professor for Music Informatics at the Institute for Music Informatics and Musicology (IMWI) of the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe, Germany.
